Lorraine’s love of art began when she was a child. Her parents provided plenty of art materials and lots of encouragement sending her to art classes with Arch Gratton in Queen’s Park, Ipswich. They implanted the idea that the arts were a necessary part of everyday life and that learning is a lifelong experience.
These early influences shaped Lorraine’s philosophy towards a visual art education. Lorraine says that it should be approached (at any age) with a sense of purposeful play – a willingness to explore the possibilities of various art mediums, practicing keen observation, a commitment to building a skill base, an open mind and a sense of humour. This philosophy allows the creativity of an individual to flourish.
Lorraine believes that everyone’s life can be enhanced by engaging with the arts – whichever form appeals – and you are never too young or old to learn something new. She says that the visual arts deliver benefits that add insight into other areas of study such as history, science and maths – all of which have some element in common with fine arts. Visual literacy in her opinion, after even a short art course, awakens an awareness of form, colour and design that allows people to really appreciate their surroundings, to notice the intricate beauty in nature or the uniqueness of face.
Lorraine thinks of her art practice as ever evolving. There is always a skill to improve upon or a new one to acquire. Her art practice is multi-faceted and includes drawing, printmaking, artist books, watercolour and acrylic painting, mixed media, sculpture and textile/fibre art. Lorraine also enjoys mentoring people on their creative journey generously passing on skills and aiding her students to find their innate creativity she believes that we all possess.
Lorraine is currently teaching art at Bremer Institute of TAFE and Advanced Drawing at Arts Alive.
